Cornwall, like the rest of England, is unpredictable when it comes to the weather. One day we bask in soaring sunshine and the next the heavens have opened. For your holiday here in Newquay, we’ve put together a list of things to do in the area, without having to worry if you’ll be affected by the inevitably changeable forecast.
1. Visit Cornwall’s Crealy
Cornwall’s Crealy has it all: rides, animals, entertainment and attractions for the whole family. This adventure park is a full-proof way of enjoying yourself with the kids whatever the weather. With Halloween coming up, they’ve got a whole host of things happening, including a visit from the Crealy Witch, a pumpkin carving competition, close up encounters at the Crocodile Corner Reptile House, face painting, magic shows and more.
2. Take a stroll at Trenance Gardens and Leisure Park
If it isn’t warm enough to sunbathe on one of Newquay’s beaches (link to Newquay beach guide), this is a perfect option to head with the family for a fun day out. Trenance Gardens is a picturesque and peaceful spot in Newquay for children and families to enjoy a picnic around the boating lake and feed the ducks. Further on you’ll discover Trenance Leisure Park, complete with miniature railways, pitch and putt, crazy golf, bowling green, children’s playground and Waterworld swimming pool.
3. Eat Out
Newquay is full of excellent restaurants and cafes to visit, making it one of the must-dos during your visit. From traditional fish and chips, international cuisine, grills, vegetarian/vegan food, pubs, Cornish ice cream and fresh seafood. Some of our favourite’s include the Mermaid Inn just around the corner at Porth beach, Lewinnick Lodge, a restaurant with a breathtaking view of the coast, Little Kahuna, for delicious pan-Asian food, and The Beached Lamb Café, a vegetarian/vegan café with amazing milkshakes and healthy options.
4. Have a family day at Dairyland Farmworld
Open from March to November, Dairyland is a fun-filled family day out, whatever the weather. With action packed indoor play areas and plenty of animals to see, including Alpacas, this is a favourite amongst families throughout the year. Enjoy slides, nature trails, tractor and pony rides, animal feeing, museum tours and more.
5. Wander around Trerice House
Remaining little unchanged, Trerice House is an intimate Elizabethan manor with a beautiful interior and delightful garden, inspiring the likes of Winston Graham when writing Poldark and used in the original 1970’s TV version. The tranquillity of this location is the perfect getaway during your stay in Cornwall, and can be enjoyed by all the family. In October, visit Trerice for stargazing on the 17th for an evening of discovery with the Kernow Astronomers, or for a Tudor banquet on the 31st for a four course banquet in this authentic historic setting.
6. Pamper yourself
Holidays are a time for relaxing, and Newquay has plenty of spas for you to let go and unwind. Treat yourself and feel rejuvenated with a massage or beauty treatment at the Hotel Victoria, a five ‘bubble’ star rated beach-side treatment at The Headland Spa or get pampered and glam at the Ocean Breeze Spa at Sands Resort Hotel.
7. Watch the sunset
Though we wouldn’t advise you do this when it is pouring it down in gale force winds, the sunsets in Cornwall are pretty incredible, and some of the best appear as we enter into the cooler months. Head to one of the many beaches along the North Cornwall coast just before sunset, wrapped up in a coat and blanket, to witness the spectacular crimson, amaranthine and amber hues blaze above the sea.
8. See a movie
We finish our list with nothing more, nothing less, than an evening at the pictures. What better way to get away from those rain clouds than enjoying the movie everybody is talking about in the comfort of a cinema, complete with a tub of ice cream, cup of pic ‘n’ mix and an overflowing bag of popcorn? In the centre of town, Lighthouse Cinema shows all the latest movies in roomy modern screens. Visit on Super Saver Mondays when all films are just £5.
